Cattle supply at Pugu market per
average day have increased slightly by 4.4 per cent to push down prices
at an average of the same per cent, to stabilize meat prices.
According to the Ministry of Industry
and Trade weekly report ending last Friday, the average sales per day
climbed to 775 from 742 cattle a day of various breeds.
Female cattle prices went down by 1.0
per cent to 475,000/- and 3.9 per cent to 450,000/- per cattle for G2
and G3 respectively.
The increased supply assisted keeping meat prices
at equilibrium following a brief destabilization during a recently
religious festival that saw cost of a kilogram of a beef surge to
between 7,000/- and 8,000/- .
The ‘Daily News’ spot survey shows that
the prices have since dropped to equilibrium level of around 5,000/- and
6,000/- for a kilo of beef, depending with a suburb location.
Also, on
the goat market supply went up by slightly over 10 per cent to 335
animals, dragging down substantial animal costs by almost 20 per cent.
The highest fall was registered for
prices of female G3 and male G3 after they plummeted by almost 25 per
cent each to 45,000/- and 50,000/- per goat respectively. For female G2
and male G2 goats, the prices of animals slid by 13.9 per cent to
80,000/- and 15 per cent to 110,000/- per animal.
However, on sheep supply, the market
experienced a sharp decline after number of animal that were sold
plunged by 24.2 per cent to 100 sheep, triggering prices rise.
The
prices for female G2 and G3 climbed up by 6.6 per cent and 4.4 per cent
to 70,000/- and 47,000/- per sheep respectively while G2 jumped up by
6.2 per cent to 85,000/- and G3 stagnant at 55,000/- per animal.
