Cargo dealers braced for $0.30 charge

Dealers of cargo destined to member states of the Central Corridor Transit Transport Facilitation Agency (TTFA) will begin to pay a $0.30 levy per tonne, Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) has said.

TPA acting Director General Madeni Kipande stated in a notice yesterday that the corridor levy will become effective starting next February.

“TTFA member states have agreed to introduce $0.30 corridor levy per tonne or part thereof transit dry imports destined to Burundi, the DR Congo, Rwanda and Uganda,” he said here.

In addition, a dealer will also be required to pay $6 per TEU and $12 per 40-feet in transit containerised imports destined to these four countries.

The levy will be collected by TPA and later be remitted to TTFA.

The agency’s role is to ensure that the central corridor is available for exporters and importers for landlocked states of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and DRC Congo as an efficient economic addition to other trade routes.

It also monitors the route performance through proactive collection, processing and dissemination of transport data in order to support the planning and operations of the member states.
