Transit goods handling up by 18 pc

Volume of transit goods has increased by almost 18 per cent on the back of improved port efficiency and road infrastructure, the Bank of Tanzania (BoT) said.

The volume, according to BoT in its July's Monthly Economic Review, increased to 1, 000,954 tonnes, up from 852,470 tonnes registered for the year ended June 2011.

"The good performance in transportation receipts was mainly on account of an increase in the volume of transit goods associated with improved port efficiency and road infrastructure," the review indicates.

Transit goods generated 513.9 million US dollars (about 822.24bn/-) up to year ended June, against 486.2 million US dollars (777.92bn/-) of June, 2011.

The transport sector assisted to push services receipt to 2.39 billion US dollars (3.82tr/-) compared to 2.15 billions US dollars (3.44tr/-) recorded in the corresponding period of 2011. "Travel and transportation receipts recorded most of the increase," BoT said.

Travel on the other hand generated 1.47 billion US dollars (2.35tr/- )from 1.32 billion US dollars (2.11tr/-) of the previous year, largely attributed to an increase in the number of tourist arrivals.

Provisional statistics show that the number of tourist arrivals went up to 860,718 compared to 834,801 recorded during the year ending June 2011.

Due to improved infrastructure especially the road sector, Tanzania Port Authority (TPA) targets to increase the port cargo handling efficiency by moving more containers and lose cargo in 2012/13.

According to the Ministry of Transport 2012/13 budget speech TPA plans to handle 12.65 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of general cargo, an increase of almost five per cent from 12.1 mtpa.

Also the speech shows that the ports-include Dar es Salaam, Tanga and Mtwara-target to handle a total of 576,300 Twenty foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) from 530,089 TEUs moved in 2011/12.  

Tanzania International Containers Terminal Services (TICTS) targets to increase its share of containers handled by 14,700 TEUs from 357,105TEUs of last fiscal year to 406,300TEUs projected in 2012/13.
