Vodacom to dish out bonus to M-Pesa clients

Over six million Vodacom Tanzania M-Pesa customers will from today receive a profit distribution accumulated through M-Pesa Trust Accounts, the firm announced.

All M-Pesa users will from today benefit from the interest earned from these deposits and will continue to benefit from this arrangement every quarter thereafter.

To start with, 20bn/- will be deposited in the wallets of customers who have been with the company since the inception of the service up to September 2014.

All stakeholders from the M-Pesa supply chain -- super agents, retail agents, and individual customers -- will benefit from this distribution.

The M-Pesa Trust is held in commercial banks and it keeps all the funds that M-Pesa users deposit in their M-Pesa accounts. Mr Rene Meza, Vodacom Tanzania’s Managing Director said, “Our customers have made M-Pesa the success story of our times and we thank them for their loyalty.

M-Pesa has transformed the lives of many Tanzanians and through today’s initiative many more will continue to benefit from it.

“From today, we will deposit in our M-Pesa customers’ wallets a portion of the interest earned from the Trust accounts since 2004.

To begin with, we will distribute 20bn/- to over 6 million customers, retail agents and super agents and we shall do so every quarter henceforth.”

He added: “The amount that one would receive as their profit share will depend on the level of activity on their M-Pesa wallet and the length of time they have been customers. Such activities include transfers, bill payments and airtime purchases to name but a few.

I would like to encourage our customers to continue utilizing our M-Pesa service in order to benefit from future distributions of profit. To find out how much you will receive, SMS the word AMOUNT to 15300.”
