Tanzania's pledge to manufacturing sector

The government has pledged to provide more support to over 51,000 manufacturing industries in Tanzania with the aim of addressing the challenge of unemployment in the country.

The promise was made on Friday night by the Industry and Trade Minister, Dr Abdallah Kigoda, when a roofing material producer Aluminium Africa (Alaf) Limited launched its new logo.

Dr Kigoda said that Tanzania has more than 51,000 industries, out of which 2,000 including Alaf Ltd are large scale ones. He said if efforts are directed to the sector, the country will be in a position to generate many jobs that would make unemployment “a thing of the past.”

“Tanzania has so far tried its best to address the unemployment issue but we won’t end there. We are looking forward to providing more support to manufacturing industries, the move which we believe will be of tangible fruits,” Dr Kigoda said.

It is estimated that Tanzania produces more than 750,000 graduates annually but only 25 per cent of them are absorbed in the formal sector.

Recently Labour and Employment Deputy Minister Dr Milton Makongoro Mahanga was quoted as saying the government has increased its budget for empowering youth from Sh3 billion in 2014/2015 financial year to Sh5 billion in the coming fiscal year to address the problem of unemployment.

“We are also trying to see how we could cheaply get the raw materials for our industries so as to cut down the production costs and hence the price for goods,” Dr Kigoda explained.

He said Tanzania has created mutual relationship with many countries including China and the country is receiving 1 million tonnes of iron annually.

However, Dr Kigoda called on manufacturers to cooperate with the government in making the latter’s plans realistic and asked them to charge reasonable prices which reflect the costs of production to attract more customers and hence enable industrialisation.
