Tanzania: National IT data centre in pipeline

Optimism is high for a booming data hosting business as construction of a national centre in Dar es Salaam nears completion.

The Minister for Communications, Science and Technology, Prof Makame Mbarawa, said in the city on Tuesday that the centre would have state-of-the-art infrastructure to provide high quality database hosting services to government and business institutions.

“This is big business. There will be a boom of database hosting... (because) it will offer cost-effective alternative to those who host their servers abroad,” the minister said during a tour to the construction site of the facility.

The national internet data centre is one among three centres earmarked for construction in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma and Zanzibar, thanks to a 93.7 million US dollars financial support from Exim Bank of China that will also be used for IP network and extension of the fibre optic cable.

The centre which is on 3,050 square meter space, will have 184 telecommunication racks and 1010 server space. It will provide a network platform for Big Data, Cloud Computing, Data Mining and other similar data services.

Prof Mbarawa said the government planned the construction work should be completed by August, this year and operations begin soon afterwards.

The construction centre follows completion of a second phase of the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) project since 2012, where a total of 7,560 kilometre of optic fibre cable has been laid.

The backbone is managed and operated by the Tanzania Telecommunications Company Ltd (TTCL) on behalf of the government, through the Ministry of Communication Science and Technology (MCST).

The infrastructure is expected to enhance usage of ICT applications for sustainable socio-economic development including implementation of e-government, e-learning, e-health, e-commerce and other similar applications.
