Tanica revenues up

The Tanganyika Instant Coffee Company (Tanica) revenues have jumped to 4.5bn/- in the year ending 2012 from 4bn/- recorded in the previous period, thanks to the appropriate management strategies deployed to tap huge potential of both local and international markets.

Tanica, the sole manufacturer of instant coffee in the East and Central Africa, produces dried instant coffee of different blends for domestic and export markets.

The outstanding performance, according to Tanica General Manager, Mr Leonidas Ishansha is part of the achievements in recent years that enabled the company to win the KPMG’s award for the 100 top mid sized firms in 2013.

“Meeting the quality standards of the Tanzania Bureau of Standards, Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) and International Standards on Food Safety Management Systems (ISO) remain the company’s top priority for penetrating both domestic and foreign markets,” said Mr Ishansha in a news conference held in Dar es Salaam over the weekend.

By producing high quality instant coffee, he said Tanica has managed to penetrate new markets of the Far East Asia and Australia and maintain the traditional ones including those in North America, Europe and Africa.

Furthermore, he said what makes Tanica the sole manufacturer is that it transforms roasted coffee to instant sell in bulk and retail domestically and internationally.

In Tanzania, Tanica sells its products to major packing companies including Serengeti Cafe and Africafe, who pack the coffee in their own trademarks.

However, Mr Ishansha said the company has been operating below capacity to around 250 tonnes annually instead total installed competence of 500 tonnes due to factors related to limited markets and competitions from large scale producers in Brazil and Vietnam.

Also, he said low domestic consumptions has been contributing to operating below capacity where statistics show that only 10 per cent of the coffee produced in the country is consumed in the local market while 90 per cent is exported.
