Geita Gold Mine wins tax compliance award

The Geita Gold Mine (GGM) Company was recently awarded as the most tax compliant firm in the mining category, it was announced.

GGM said in a statement that it received the award as the most compliant taxpayer under the mining sector at the national level for its consistent contribution to state coffers. It said in 2012 alone GGM’s contributions totalled US$213.8 million (about 336.2bn/-).

Speaking at the 7th Tax Payers’ Day organised by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), the Vice-President, Dr Mohamed Gharib Billal, lauded GGM and other large compliant tax payers.

“For Tanzanian economy to flourish, everyone is supposed to be committed to pay their taxes faithfully to the government. “Today we are giving this award as a symbol of the government’s appreciation to your invaluable contributions.”

The event held at Mwalimu Nyerere Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam was attened by representatives of various mining companies, corporate bodies and NGOs.

In his acceptance speech GGM General Manager, Mr Michael Van Anen said “At GGM we are committed to the compliance of our host government and its people.

“Geita Gold Mine is proud of its positive achievements and we continue to work hard to ensure our host community will be better off for us being there.”

GGM is owned by AngloGold Ashanti and has invested US$600 million since 2000. It is an open cast mine with three pits.

It currently employs 3,541 people, both directly and indirectly, with a further 155 casuals and apprentices. Approximately 95 per cent of these employees are Tanzanian nationals.
