Dar holiday shoppers overwhelm supermarkets

Uchumi  Supermarkets experienced customers’ boom this Christmas compared to the previous year, officials at the outlet say.

The supermarket chain, said to be the cheapest outlet in the country, reported that most of the Christmas shoppers were attracted by the lowest prices offered compared to others.

Uchumi’s Country Manager, Mr Chris Lenana, said since the beginning of this month, the outlet experienced an increase of about 1,500 shoppers daily compared to last year.

“If all days of the year were Christmas things could have been superb,” Mr Lenana told the ‘Daily News’ a day before Christmas.

The most bought items included Uchumi white bread that saw 2,700 pieces sold at a promotion price of 900/- a loaf, instead of 1,500/-.

Other items that were hotcake during the month were carrot chapatti, Samsung electric cooker, Coca Cola, Kilimanjaro and Sayona bottling water.

To deal with the influx of customers and reduction of traveling time to Nyerere Road, the chain plans to open three outlets in January at the City Centre, Sinza and Kijitonyama in Dar es Salaam.

The supermarket that boast of its discount prices, says a 1.5 litre bottle of Kilimanjaro drinking water goes at 950/- while other outlets sold the same product for 1,200/-. A kilo of sugar is sold at 1,900/- compared to 2,100/- in other shops around the city.

The supermarket which has just celebrated its second anniversary in Tanzania, this year, says its business is booming to warrant expansion, with the views of taking its business close to customers.

The Uchumi Supermarkets, said in September, this year, it expects its monthly payments to its suppliers to increase ten times to 12bn/- following the expansion drive that the firm is pursuing.

This is a gesture to promote local manufacturing as the supply chain gives priority to domestic producers and suppliers to feed their outlets.
