Azania launches modern grain cargo handling facility

Congestion at the Dar es Salaam port will ease further following the establishment of Azania Grain Bulk, a cargo handling facility worth 15bn/- by Mikoani Traders Limited.

The facility has the capacity to handle more than 40,000 tonnes of variious grain consignments. Mikoani Traders Limited is a renowned manufacturer and exporter of healthy, nutritious and high quality wheat product bearing the brand name of Azania Wheat Flour for the past 10 years within the country and beyond.

Briefing journalists on the operations of the Azania Grain Bulk Dar es Salaam, the Mikoani Traders Limited Assistant Director, Mr Awadh Fuad Edha said the facility can handle 30 trucks of 20 tonnes each an hour, thus contributing significantly to cutting down congestion at the port.

“Before starting operations, it took about 10 days to offload a vessel with capacity of 30,000 tonnes but with the facility, it takes only two days to do the same,” he said.

In the second phase, the Azania Grain Terminal capacity to handle grain consignments will reach 100,000 tonnes from 40,000 tonnes at present.

He said the facility which use hi-tech was designed and made in Italy, currently employs more than 150 people in just the first phase of the project implementation, thus contributing immensely in the government efforts to create jobs and alleviate poverty.

“It is the first inland grain terminal handling facility in the East and Central African Region that handles grain consignments,” noted the Mikoani Traders Ltd, Managing Director, Mr Fuad Edha Awadh.
