Modernisation of Dar port services underway

A major project to modernise operations at the Dar es Salaam port through online customs clearance is now underway.

This is the long awaited electronic single window system, which is set to boost efficiency at the port by reducing dwell time and making optimal use of the port facilities.

The TPA’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, Phares Magesa who heads the technical committee of the project told the Business Standard in Dar es Salaam last week that the first phase of the project had already began and the pilot phase of the project was scheduled for April next year.

He said the system would be rolled out to the sea ports of Tanga and Mtwara by July next year and later on to other ports of entry and exit including airports and border posts.

The Tanzania Ports Authority is government’s lead organization responsible for designing and implementing the project has set aside US $ 10 million for the project, he said.

It is expected that upon completion the project will make Dar es Salaam port the leading in East and Central Africa in terms of efficiency by cutting dwell time to five days, or less from the current 10 days, he said.

“The main objective of the electronic single window system is to make the Dar es Salaam port the most efficient in East and Central Africa by simplifying cargo clearance procedures which will lead cutting down of dwell time to five days or less from the current 10 days.”

The cutting down of dwell time will boost at Dar es Salaam port and help it to have an edge over its competitors, he said.

“We hope Dar es Salaam will be the most preferred port in the East and Central region of Africa. It will be the most efficient in terms of simplified clearance procedures and reduced dwell time,” he said.
