Out of 880 tonnes, according to Mr Mathayo, 126.2 tonnes beef, 88.4 tonnes mutton and the remaining 667 tonnes goats’ meat.

Dr David was responding to Mr Modestus Kilufi (Mbarali-CCM) who wanted to know why the government had not yet established reliable markets for livestock and ways to educate farmers on best livestock keeping practices.

The minister said that in a move to improve livestock markets in the country government had established 300 primary auctions, 12 main auctions and other 10 in the country’s borders.

Dr Mathayo said that government has embarked on various efforts in a move aimed at developing the livestock sector by building seven primary meat processing factories and 67 dairy factories to process variety of dairy products.

“We have a number of hide processing factories in the country and others are in the process of being built,” Dr Mathayo said adding that government has prepared a sustainable plan for good land management for livestock keepers in 479 villages in 69 districts in 21 regions.

The minister said a total of 1,284,011.88 hectares have been allocated for livestock grazing and the areas are safeguarded by law.

In his supplementary question, Mr Kilufi also wanted to know immediate measures government was undertaking to end the ongoing fracas between pastoralists and crop farmers.

Minister Mathayo responded saying that both farmers and pastoralists have the right to use the land, however, it was high time each party obeyed the law.
