Tanzanian heads Africa’s professional committee

An economist with Bank of Tanzania (BoT), Mr Francis Assenga (pictured), has been elected president of the UNI-Africa professionals and Manager Committee, the post he will serve for the next four years.

The Nairobi meeting that attracted 455 members also elected Mr Assenga the Vice- President of the UNI-Global Professionals and Managers Committee.

According to a statement issued in Dar es Salaam yesterday, members from Rwanda, Ghana and Bukina Faso nominated the newly elected president who later received overwhelming support from all African countries except Senegal and Cameroon.

This is the first time a Tanzanian is heading the UNIAfrica and UNI-Global Unions that voice for over 20 million workers in the service sector around the world.

Through 900 affiliated unions, the UNI represents workers in cleaning and security, commerce, finance, gaming, graphical and packaging in 150 countries. Other sectors are hair and beauty, ICTS, media, entertainment and arts; post and logistics, social insurance, sports, agency and tourism.

UNI Africa Regional Secretary Zakari Koudoudou said the meeting delegates ensured that Africa’s progress will not be at the expense of the African people, “We need strong unions to make the African promise turn into reality.”

The meeting comes at a time when the IMF is predicting six per cent growth across Sub-Saharan Africa and the evolution of a new middle class. UNI Global Union is working with its member unions to change the rules of the game in the global labour market.
