Spending on mobile phones drops slightly

Average revenue per user of voice calls declined to 27,333/- in the quarter ending March this year from 27,411/- registered in the preceding period, with majority subscribers switching to short messages instead of voice calls.

Tanzania Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) quarterly telecom statistics for the period under review shows that the average revenue per user of sms increased to 7,303/- compared to 6,716/- of the previous quarter.

During the period, the national traffic shows the ‘on net sms’ rising to 4,066,704,931, equivalent to 17 per cent increase from 3,475,119,652 sms in the previous quarter.

Similarly, the volume of ‘off net sms’ rose to 1,069,359,250, about 28 per cent compared to 833,321,781 of the preceding period.

Among the operators, Tigo occupied the top position as the telecom company with highest national sms market share of 51 per cent, followed by Vodacom’s 38 per cent, Zantel’s seven per cent, Airtel 4 per cent and zero per cent for TTCL and Benson.

Furthermore, the number of on net traffic calls per minute recorded a six per cent fall to 6,940,819,091 from 7,401,611,581 registered in the previous quarter. The off net calls per minutes slipped by six per cent to 245,308,523 compared to 260,893,340 of the preceding period.

Vodacom was the most active, having grabbed 42 per cent ‘on net calls’ market share followed by Tigo by 32 per cent and Airtel by 17 per cent. Also Vodacom had highest market share in the in the ‘off net calls’ by recording 35 per cent, Airtel 32 per cent and Tigo 24 per cent.
