Road licence fee payment simplified

The newly introduced system of collecting road licence fee online is expected to help the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to double its collections in the area and save payers time.

Briefing the media in the city yesterday, TRA revenue and accounting manager Ramadhan Sengati, said that the new approach will help to enhance collections as all transactions will be sent to TRA on the spot.

“The system will commence in August. There will be no more ‘middlemen’ commonly known as vishoka who always linger around our offices masquarading as tax officials,” said Mr Sengati.

For his part, TRA’s education and taxpayer services director Richard Kayombo, said currently the country has a population of 1.5 million cars which are privately owned and have been registered with the Authority.

“These are required to pay road licence fee, but sometimes back the clever ones used to evade, something which denied the government a lot of money,” said Mr Kayombo reiterating that the move will also reduce congestions at TRA offices.

He noted that under the new system, a car owner will be able to pay the fee through appointed vendors and collect the disc from any TRA office. Previously, people had to go to the Ilala, Mwenge or Temeke TRA offices only.

“TRA will be monitoring the payment online,” detailed Mr Kayombo.

Corroborating, Mr Sengati noted that people spent too much time queuing to pay the road licence fee before, now things will change.
