Tanga launches its EPZ at Pongwe

Jakaya Kikwete is scheduled to inaugurate a multibillion Special Economic Zone (EPZ) project at Pongwe area here.
 
A statement by Tanga Regional Commissioner Chiku Gallawa said President Kikwete will be accompanied by First Lady Salma and other senior government officials in his oneday tour of the region.
 
The RC said the 277 million US dollar project was initiated by Tanga Economic Corridor Ltd, a joint venture between Tanga City and Good PM Group, a non-governmental organisation that deals with infrastructural development in Africa.
 
Ms Gallawa said Tanga city has 49 per cent shares in the company with Good PM Group controlling 51 per cent shares as the major shareholder.
 
Tanga City was required to contribute the land for the investment and while the major shareholder has to develop the infrastructure.
 
Tanga city has already allocated about hectares 67.7 at Pongwe area on the outskirts of the city. According to the RC, about 40 million US dollars would be spent on infrastructure development and 237 million US dollars on direct industrial investment.
 
The regional boss said that the project was expected to benefit over 2,000 youths in terms of direct employment in the 17 industries to be established under the project. She called on Tanga residents to turn up in big number to welcome the president with his entourage at the airport this morning.
