Cattle supply dwindles at Pugu market

The weekly cattle supply at Pugu market declined by four per cent to 703 from the previous week’s 733 herds of cattle.

A weekly market report by the Ministry of Industry and Trade for the period ending June 7, 2013 shows that prices for mature cattle female grade two (G2) increased by 1.2 per cent to 600,000/- from 593,000/- recorded in previous period.

But the prices for grade three (G3) female cattle recorded a slight increase of about 0.5 per cent to 578,000/- from 575,000/- of the previous period.

Likewise, the prices for mature cattle male grade (G2) rose to 805,500/- in the week under review from 800,000/- recorded in the previous period, representing a 0.7 per cent increase, while the prices of the male cattle grade (G3) made a slight gain of 2.5 per cent to 615,000/- compared to 600,000/- of the previous week.

Meanwhile, the daily average sales of goats at the market declined to 355 during the week under review compared to 486 supplied in the previous period, an equivalent of eight per cent fall. 

The prices for mature female goat grade (2) dropped slightly to 80,000/- from 82,500/- of the previous week, equivalent to three per cent.

The prices for female goats grade (3) increased slightly to 65,000/- from 64,000/-, which is 1.6 per cent rise. 

The mature male goats grade (2) saw its prices dropping to 97,500/- from 100,000/- while male goats grade (3) recorded a four per cent in price increase to 78,000/- compared to 75,000/- of the preceding marketing period.

The average sales per market day for sheep increased to 212 during the week compared to 194 in the previous session. 

The prices for mature female sheep grade (2) declined by 3.4 per cent to 70,000/- from 72,500/-, while female sheep grade (3) saw its prices rising by 4.4 per cent to 47,000/- compared to 45,000/- of the previous session. 

The prices for male sheep grade (2) and grade (3) declined by 1.8 per cent and 0.9 per cent to 81,000/- from 82,500/-, respectively.
