Tanesco, Symbion to build 400MW plant in Mtwara

Tanesco has partnered with US-based power firm Symbion Power to build a 400MW gas-driven electricity plant in Mtwara to ease power shortages in the south of the country and elsewhere.

Energy and Minerals minister Sospeter Muhongo said when tabling his ministry’s 2013/14 budget estimates that the successful implementation of the project would significantly contribute to the development of Mtwara and Lindi regions.

“I want to assure MPs from southern regions, including Lindi and Mtwara, that even the White House is aware of this project, and this means that we are serious in its implementation,” Prof Muhongo said.

The Tanesco-Symbion project would also entail the construction of 650 kilometres of transmission lines between Mtwara and Ruvuma regions, he added.

Prof Muhongo said Tanesco and Symbion had signed a memorandum of understanding ahead of the project’s implementation on public-private partnership. The MoU was signed by Tanesco acting Managing Director Felchesmi Mramba and Symbion CEO Paul Hinks.

The two partners have agreed to set up a joint-venture company to oversee the project, which include construction of a 650-kilometre transmission backbone from Mtwara to Songea where it will be connected to the national power grid through a line that will be built from Makambako to Songea.

Symbion is an international engineering contractor specialising in electrical infrastructure projects.
