The Chinese government has refuted claims
that the country was the main source of counterfeit goods entering Tanzania,
and vowed to ensure only quality goods will get into the Tanzanian market.
For
many years now, China has been blamed over the flooding of counterfeit
products, which have been costing the Tanzanian economy dearly.
Chinese ambassador to Tanzania, Mr Lu Youqing, told
reporters on Thursday that he did not believe that the substandard goods were
all coming from China.
“The government has heard the claims, and it is developing
strategies, which will make sure that the poor quality products do not get out
of the country,” said Mr Lu when introducing himself to the media.
He said his government was working hard to ensure that the
problem is solved and thus clear its image in most African countries.
“I do not
believe that we are selling poor quality products, because our trade volume
last year was about US$3.46 trillion. That shows that if we are trading in low
quality products then no one will purchase them,” he said.
