Total Tanzania Limited has launched awareness campaign on road safety education to 210,435 pupils in Dar es Salaam, Kibaha and Bagamoyo in the Coast Region as part of activities under its corporate social responsibility (CSR).
This was unveiled in Dar es Salaam at the weekend by the Total Tanzania Limited Head of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Mr Marsha Msuya, after the company’s employee’s tour and donations to the patients at the Ocean Road Cancer Institute.
Apart from road safety, Total Tanzania Limited corporate responsibility and sustainable development also focuses on Health, Education and sponsorship and donations.
He said in an interview that it is essential to instill road safety habits to children, as it will help them to be more responsible. “This is a global road safety for children programme with the moto ‘Road Safety for children a decade for action’ intended to be deployed for ten years and it started in 2011,” he said.
“The campaign is about imparting correct practices including road crossing, boarding the bus and others on the first day of this awareness campaign,” he said.
The project was done in collaboration with AMEND, a road safety NGO contracted by Total Tanzania Limited, to deploy and monitor the project in schools and the Tanzania Traffic police.
The Project was deployed in schools near the main roads and those located in towns which pose high traffic risk. Also, the company donated 850 school desks to some primary schools in Dar es Salaam Region in a move aimed at improving learning environment and raising the standard of education in the country.
Schools that received donation are Hekima, Kombo, Bwawani (in Ilala Municipality), Chamazi, Mbande, Kingugi (in Temeke Municipality), Goba, King’ongo, BOKO National Housing Primary School and Bunju A (in Kinondoni Municipality).
On health, Total Tanzania Limited in Partnership with the United against Malaria deployed malaria education training to 10 primary schools in Dar es Salaam.
Total Tanzania Limited is a recipient of the United against Malaria award in recognition of its extraordinary commitment in malaria safe activities.
The company offers a chance for internship and graduate trainee programmes to students to work at Total for a period of one year. Based on performance they are given work opportunity on International mobility for graduate trainees to work in other Total.
