The government says it will repossess farms that have not been developed by investors for more than 12 years.
The Minister for Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development, Prof Anna Tibaijuka, told Parliament on Tuesday that it would enforce the law regarding the development of such land.
Responding to queries raised by MPs when debating her ministry’s budget proposals, Prof Tibaijuka said the government could not remain silent while there were millions of people who do not have land for agriculture.
Land lined up for repossession include the National Ranching Company (Narco) and National Agricultural and Food Corporation (Nafco) farms.

“These areas have been in the hands of investors for more than 12 years and nothing has been done...they will be handed over to the people,” she said.
According to Prof Tibaijuka, Tanzania has more than 20 million livestock that needed pasture. She also stressed the need for proper and equitable land use to minimise disputes.
