The number of beds occupied in October
last year in various hotels decreased to by 5.7 per cent compared to the
previous month due to slight decline of domestic and international
visitors.
According to a monthly survey of hotel
occupancy carried by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), out of 150
hotels surveyed only 71 responded.
The NBS initiated the process of
surveying hotels in order to get useful and correct statistics necessary
for the visitors and planning purposes in the tourism sector. When
compared with the corresponding period in 2011, the result shows that
bed occupancy rate decreased by 2 percent.
The NBS quarterly Gross Domestic Product
report for the quarter between July to September last year shows that
hotels and restaurants recorded a growth rate of 6.1 percent compared to
5.3 percent in the corresponding quarter of 2011.
“The increase in growth was attributed
to increase in the number of domestic and international visitors in
hotels,” stated the report.
