Swissport Tanzania, provider of ground handling services, has sealed an
agreement with Africa’s new low-cost carrier (LCC), Fastjet, under which the
ground handler will provide services throughout the airline’s network.
Swissport Tanzania Chief Executive Officer Gaudence Temu has hailed the
business deal, saying the local subsidiary of the multinational firm has the
capacity to efficiently serve the new client.
He said Swissport Tanzania’s personnel have been making preparations to
handle the low cost concept and that they were now ready.
Fastjet, Africa’s
first pan-continental LCC, has just launched operations in Tanzania’s domestic
market, with flights from its Dar es Salaam base to Kilimanjaro and Mwanza
before it expands its network to the entire continent.
Under the partnership agreement, Swissport will supply a variety of
airport services, be responsible for service delivery and support and supply
chain growth throughout the Fastjet network.
A statement by Swissport International over the weekend quoted the
firm’s Executive Vice-President of Ground Handling for Europe, Middle East,
Asia and Africa, Mr Juan Jose Andres Alvez, as boasting of Swissport’s
unrivaled experience in handling LCC.
“Swissport has a huge experience with LCC handling in Europe and we
look forward to assisting Fastjet in building up this model in Africa,
supported by our knowledge and processes,” he said, adding that the deal
includes all of the logistics challenges in setting up a network of ground
handling operations and management systems.
Fastjet Chief Executive Officer Ed Winter was optimistic that Swissport
will deliver to expectations, “Swissport has a world-leading reputation and
track record for providing high quality ground services to airlines around the
world.”
He said Fastjet, which creates a pan-continental African airline
offering international standards of safety, quality, security and reliability,
finds it inevitable to “have a handling partner that gives these qualities top
priority and one that also matches our ambitious growth plans for Africa.”
Swissport International provides ground services to about 116 million
passengers and 3.5 million tonnes of cargo, annually, on behalf of 650
client-companies in the aviation sector. With 39,000 employees, it’s active at
195 stations in 38 countries on five continents.
