The
government will spend over one trillion/- to decongest roads in Dar es Salaam
during the 2012/13 financial year, the Minister for Works, Dr John Magufuli,
told the National Assembly here on Thursday.
Moving
his ministry's budget estimates in the House, the minister said the money will
also cater for construction of flyovers and ring roads.
The
much-awaited construction of Kigamboni Bridge to link Magogoni and Kigamboni
and construction of ramps to facilitate ferry boat services between Dar es
Salaam and Bagamoyo are also on the budget.
Dr
Magufuli said that the government had allocated 899.063bn/- for construction of
various roads in the city. He also said that the government had set aside 2bn/-
for a flyover at the junction of the ever-busy Nelson Mandela Expressway and
Nyerere Road (TAZARA area).
"We
have set aside local funds amounting 2.79bn/- for construction of Kigamboni
Bridge. This project is a partnership of the government and the National Social
Security Fund (NSSF)," Dr Magufuli told the House.
The
minister stated that 2bn/- had been allocated for construction of ferries and
boats ramps between Bagamoyo and Dar es Salaam. Plans are afoot to introduce
boat transportation linking the two urban areas.
Dr
Magufuli noted that the total cost of administering all roads and bridges under
construction is 170bn/-.
"Feasibility
studies and detailed project designs conducted across the country worth
6.612bn/- have been carried out while ferry projects in Geita, Mwanza, Mara,
Dar es Salaam, Mtwara, Ruvuma, Kigoma, Morogoro, Tanga, Kagera and Coast
regions have been allocated 28.068bn/-.
According
to the minister, the ongoing construction of government buildings and houses
will cost 101.932bn/-. All the construction and rehabilitation projects
mentioned would employ over 650,000 people.
"This
figure doesn't include food vendors, brick makers, masons, sand and gravel
diggers," he stated.
In
another development, the Contractors Registration Board (CRB) had registered
9,041 contractors and deregistered 2,576 while Engineers Registration Board
(ERB) had registered 11,264 engineers and deregistered six consultant engineers
and five consultancy companies.
Dr
Magufuli stated that Road Fund Board would in this financial year collect
400bn/- that will be used in construction of roads and bridges by
TanRoads, regional administration and
local authorities.
Meanwhile,
the Parliamentary Committee on Infrastructure said that Tanzania was losing
4bn/-per day (1.44tri/- per year) due to traffic jams in Dar es Salaam and that
the government should expedite its plans to decongest the city.
Speaking
on behalf of the committee, its Vice-Chairperson, Ms Anne Kilango Malecela,
advised the government to build a flyover linking Ubungo and Chang'ombe first
before building the one at TAZARA.
