The national flag carrier, Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), is
expected to be back in the skies on Friday after repair of its sole Boeing
737-500 plane is finalised.
The plane developed a crack along the front window forcing the airliner
to cancel its scheduled flights on Tuesday.
Sources within the company on said
that the airliner has already secured the necessary spare parts and the
company's engineers were working round the clock to ensure the repair is done
within the shortest time possible.
"Repair of our plane has already begun and we expect it to be
ready by today (yesterday). We have already secured the necessary spare parts
from Britain and our engineers are working round the clock to ensure that
maintenance is finalized.
"Aviation authorities will then do the necessary inspection and we
will be back in the skies.
Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, the ATCL Acting
Director of Operations, Captain Richard Shaidi, said the Boeing 737-500 plane
with registration number 4L AJB could not continue with its scheduled flights
for safety reasons.
Captain Shaidi said the plane was flown to Dar es Salaam on Tuesday
urging that it would start operations as soon as the wind screen is replaced.
The ATCL Acting Director of Operations, Engineer Patrick Itule, however
said such problems are common in the aviation industry but the situation with
ATCL has been different since it operates a sole plane.
He said all the people on board were yesterday booked to other planes
serving the same route."Such things are common within the aviation
businesses. All the airline companies have at least gone through this only that
other airliners are lucky that they have other planes to rescue the situation.
"It is really unfortunate and we really apologise for the
inconveniences this may cause. We will be able to resume flights soon as the
problem is rectified," he said.
