Hundreds of jobs at Mbeya Cement Company Limited will be slashed as the
parent company, Lafarge of France plans to reorganize to contain European
financial crisis.
In a statement on Wednesday, Lafarge said it will shed 460 corporate
jobs of which 90 will be in France but workers will have to opt leaving the
company.
“Lafarge has on Wednesday begun a procedure of information and
consultation regarding the proposed reorganisation of its corporate functions
and shared resources in France,” the statement said.
Lafarge which acquired 65 percent shares at MCC in 2001 through the
country’s privatisation process, said it will cut jobs worldwide to align with
the group’s new planned organisation made public last November.

“According to these plans, the group would be reorganized around an
executive committee consisting of a performance function, chiefly responsible
for the technical centers and engineering, information technology systems and
the leadership of commercial and industrial performance,” the statement added.
The reorganization will also involve innovation, chiefly responsible
for research and development, marketing and transformation with three Executive
Vice Presidents Operations, whose mission will be supervising 42 operating
entities. “The shift in the group’s center of gravity towards the countries
would lead to a decentralization of corporate functions.
As a result, the outline of the new organization that is being
announced today would entail a reduction of 460 corporate posts worldwide, of
which 90 are in France,” the statement added.
Last year, the local subsidiary
launched new look products in bags adorned with Lafarge logo to officially
usher the presence of the French construction material conglomerate.
The new bag with green and brown colours has hits the local market for
the first time this week.
The MCC General Manager Mbuvi Ngunze said during the
launch of the bags in the domestic market that the new Tembo Cement bag was
also improved to reduce leakages.
