Second-hand cars checkers picked

Four  foreign companies have won the tender to conduct pre-shipment verification of conformity (PVoC) services for used motor vehicles effective January 1, this year.

According to an advertisement in various newspapers, Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has awarded the tender to the companies after expiry of previous service provider.

The TBS has hence warned all vehicle importers of used vehicles from Japan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) countries to make sure their imports are inspected before transported to the country; otherwise they would risk  legal action.

According to the statement, those whose vehicles will enter the country without pre-shipment verification will be liable to a fine of 30 per cent of the actual vehicle value apart from the verification charges that would have been paid if they had their vehicles inspected in the said countries, according to the statement.

The companies which won the tender, according to the advertisement, are Japan Auto Appraisal Institute (JAAI), Quality Inspection Services (QIS), and East Africa Automotive Service Company Limited(EAA), all of which are bases in Japan and will inspect a vehicle at the cost of $140 (Sh238,000),  while JABAL Kilimanjaro Autoelect Mech. 

Inspection bases in United Arab Emirates will inspect a vehicle at $125 (Sh212, 500) effective January 1, this year.

“From Jan. 1, 2005, the above-mentioned firms  will be responsible for inspecting used vehicles before the importation on behalf of TBS. It should be known that the charges are fixed,” reads part of the statement.

TBS has been conduction pre-shipment verification of used vehicles since 2002 and since then international companies have been competing for the bod to get qualifies companies to provide the service.
