Kilimanjaro plans to build business town

Famous for its robust tourism industry, Kilimanjaro Region is now drawing strategies to become an industrial hot spot in the country.

To begin with, plans are underway to build an industrial and business town in Lokolova area where raw materials – available in the region and elsewhere – will be processed into new products for both domestic and foreign markets.

This was made public as the regional commissioner, Mr Leonidas Gama, addressed the press recently in Moshi, saying that the step will help in expanding business opportunities. “We will use the Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model in implementing the plan,” he said.

He noted that Lokolova Industrial and Business Township will greatly help raise the region’s economic status. “One of our region’s major economic activities is business, this project will help elevate it to new heights,” he said.

He noted that the practice of selling raw materials only is unhealthy for growth.

“We must end this trend and make our people earn more,” he said. He explained that the industries will also widen the tax collection base for the government.

In another development, the region also plans to establish a big tourist centre in Siha District. “Once completed, the centre will increase the number of tourists in the region,” he said.

According to him, the centre will have such attractions as gardens, recreational areas, a zoo, a snake park and hotels.
