M-Pesa, Uchumi take shopping to new level

Vodacom Tanzania and Uchumi Supermarket yesterday struck a deal that enables customers to shop and pay through the mobile phone company’s money transfer service - M-Pesa.

The mobile phone firm also extended its M-Pesa services at Uchumi Quality Centre, which will make shopping easier to customers.

“The partnership will see customers enjoy M-Pesa services at any time when they visit Uchumi. With this partnership, shoppers do not need to risk carrying large sums of money for shopping.

"M-Pesa will henceforth carry the cash for them safely,” the Vodacom Tanzania chief officer of sales and distribution, Mr Hasan Saleh, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

The partnership also offers Vodacom subscribers a chance to enjoy other services offered by the company including device configuration, after sales services, and device repair.

Earlier, Uchumi Supermarket country manager, Mr Chris Lenana, expressed hope that the new partnership will be beneficial to customers of both companies.

“We believe that our customers will have an easy time shopping with us. It has always been a security risk carrying cash to do shopping. With this partnership, our customers are now relieved of that fear,” said Mr Lenana.
