Dar pump prices ease slightly

It was all smiles for petrol buyers as pump prices for a litre of the vital liquid slid downwards by Sh44 as announced by the sector’s regulator on Wednesday.

Similarly, the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (Ewura) announced a Sh9 reduction in pump price for a litre of kerosene.

On the losing end are owners of vehicles that run on diesel as Ewura has marginally increased the pump price for a litre by Sh2 compared to prices that were in use last month.

According to Ewura, these changes have been caused by a change of prices of petroleum products in the world market and a slight appreciation of the shilling against the US dollar. “In line with the prevailing sector legislation, prices of petroleum products are governed by rules of supply and demand,” says Ewura director general Haruna Masebu in a statement.

According to the price schedule, a litre of petrol will cost Sh2,102 in Dar es Salaam while in Uvinza (Lugufu) it will fetch Sh2,345 a litre.

A litre of Diesel and kerosene in Dar es Salaam will cost Sh2,066 and Sh2,018 respectively, but in Uvinza (Lugufu) the products will fetch Sh2,309 and Sh2,261 respectively.

“Oil marketing companies are free to sell their products at a price that gives them a competitive advantage, provided that such price does not exceed the price cap for the relevant product,” said Mr Masebu.

Mr Masebu urged all retailers to issue receipts with respect to all sales that they make and urged consumers to demand and keep receipts that clearly show the name of the petrol station, date on which such purchase was made as well as the type of fuel and price per litre for every purchase they make.

“This can be used as an exhibit in case of a complaint lodged in the event that the selling price is above the cap price or in case the products sold are off the approved specifications,” he said.
