Tanga Cement firm invests 260bn/-

Tanga Cement Company (TCC) yesterday launched a 165 million US dollar (over 260bn/-) expansion project that will involve construction of a new clinker production line.

TCCL Board Chairman Lau Masha, speaking at the ground breaking ceremony at the company’s plant site here, said the project was scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2015.

“Apart from increasing our clinker manufacturing capacity to match the current cement grinding, this project will also reduce cement manufacturing cost, improve quality and increase cement availability,” said Mr Masha.

He said the first phase of the plant expansion project that involved installation of cement mill number two and packer between 2009 and 2010 increased the plant’s cement grinding capacity by 73 per cent to 1.3 million tonnes annually.

“However our clinker manufacturing annual capacity remained at 500,000tonnes per annum, with the short fall being covered by imports that consumed foreign currencies,” he said.

Despite the heavy investment in the expansion project, TCCL promised to continue with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme that focuses on health, education, environment and community development.

In 2012 alone, the company allocated over 400m/- on CSR programme, with 37 per cent of the allocation spent in Tanga Region. The Regional Commissioner (RC), Ms Chiku Galawa said she was impressed by the firm’s CSR programme in the region.
