Private sector apex body elects Mengi new chair

The IPP executive chairman, Mr Reginald Mengi, has been elected new Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) chair, a position he will serve for two years.

Mr Mengi was elected over the weekend during the 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of TPSF. He takes over from Ms Esther Mkwizu who has completed her tenure at the private sector apex body.

The election process was overseen by Industry and Trade permanent secretary, Joyce Mapunjo.

Mr Mengi collected 39 votes beating his competitor Mr Salum Shamte, who garnered 34 votes.

The latter was elected vice chairman. According to the TPSF constitution, the board will serve for two years with a possibility of seeking the second and last term.

The meeting also elected board members from 11 clusters. They are Mr Deodatus Mwanyika (Extractive Industry and Energy); Mr Felix Mosha (Manufacturing); Mr Enock Dondole (Regional Business Associations); Ms Anna Matinde (Women Entrepreneurs); and Mr Mbarouk Omar (Zanzibar Private Sector Organisations apex body).

The others are Peter Chisawillo (Trade); Mr Salum Shamte (Agriculture), Mr Gaudence Temu (Tourism and Natural Resources); Dr Gideon Kaunda (Corporate), Dr Charles Kimei (Banking and Financial Services) and Dr Reginald Mengi (Service Industry).

Speaking after the election, Mr Mengi said: “We want to make TPSF stronger with a unified voice.” He added that the private sector is Tanzania’s engine of economic growth.

He challenged the government to make sure that the country’s natural resources first benefit Tanzanians as it is done by South Korea and Malaysia which have helped them attain development.

He noted that all countries in the world give priority to citizens first and that this should be emulated by Tanzania.

“We have to learn from other countries’ good practices in order to develop,” he stressed.

TPSF executive director Godfrey Simbeye said the body has got strong and experienced board leaders and members who will bring it to another level.
