Inflation goes down marginally

Tanzania Inflation RateInflation declined further in April as food prices continued its downward trend, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

The NBS Director of Population Census and Social Statistics Mr Ephraim Kwesigabo said in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday that the annual inflation rate decreased to 9.4 per cent in April this year from 9.8 per cent recorded in March following a further decline in prices of food items, particularly rice.

He said the increase in commodity prices slowed in April compared to the increase of commodity prices in March. 

The period under review has witnessed also food and non alcoholic beverages inflation rate falling to 10.2 per cent compared to 11.1 per cent registered in March 2013, the NBS official said.

He said also that the annual inflation rate for food consumed home and away has declined to 9.7 per cent from to 10.7 per cent recorded in March.

According to him the 12 month index change for non-food products increased to 8.9 per cent in April from 8.5 per cent in March, largely due to rise in energy and transport costs.

The NBS official further said annual inflation rate that exclude food and energy for April increased to 6.5 per cent from 5.9 per cent recorded in March. Annual inflation rate for energy decreased to 21.6 per cent in April from 22.6 in March, he said.

The monthly headline inflation rate for April remained 0.5 per cent as it was recorded in March. The overall index increased to 141.59 in April from 140.93 in March. 

The increase is mainly attributed to the increase in non-food prices including bus fare that increased to 16.9 per cent, charcoal 3.6 per cent, petrol 1.7 per cent, kerosene 1.6 per cent, spirits and liquor 0.5 per cent, garments 0.3 per cent, and footwear 0.3 per cent.
