THE Managing Director of CRDB Bank, Dr Charles Kimei. The Managing Director of CRDB Bank, Dr Charles Kimei, is among five candidates shortlisted for the best African Banker Awards, the 2013 edition.

Apart from Dr Kimei, the list is made up of established banker from Mozambique and three Nigerian bankers, according to a statement issued in Dar es Salaam.

This is the first time a Tanzanian is shortlisted for the award since it was launched over 10 years ago by the African Banker magazine, IC Events and Business in Africa Events.

To Dr Kimei, the shortlist comes a few days only after he was appointed the chairman of Tanzania Bankers Association (TBA) early this month.

“The nomination of Dr Kimei is a pride for the nation as he heads a Tanzanian bank that is being operated by Tanzanians,” the statement reads in part. Dr Kimei, an economist, has been in banking sector for over 30 years.

Before joining CRDB Bank he was Bank of Tanzania’s Director of Policy and Research.

He took over CRDB in 1998 as Managing Director when it was a loss-making firm and turned it around to become Tanzania’s largest bank in terms of assets and deposits and second biggest in profitability after NMB.

In his first year at the helm, CRDB made a profit of 2bn/- and leads it to make a historical pre-tax profit of 108bn/-, last year.

The branches also have increased from 16 to 97. Last year the bank became the first local bank to open a subsidiary across the boarder in Burundi.

Commenting on this year’s entries Omar Ben Yedder, Publisher of African Banker magazine, was quoted saying: “I remain a staunch defender of the positive role banking institutions can play. The entries seem to get better year after year.

“The variety of entries and the quality of these entries, especially in the Deal of the Year category, illustrate the increased sophistication and the growing investment banking activity across Africa, and that can only be encouraging.”

The Award is a landmark event that brings together over 500 key industry players and top government officials from Africa and around the world to celebrate excellence and best practices in African banking and finance.

The winners will be announced at the Awards ceremony on the 29th May during the annual African Development Bank (AfDB) meetings in Marrakech, Morocco.
