Zanzibar’s national debt over 250bn/-

Zanzibar national debt stood at 252.28bn/- in March this year, the Minister of State- Finance, Planning and Economy Development, Mr Omar Yussuf Mzee, informed the House of Representatives.

He said that the government is working hard to settle the debts which include 48.51bn/- internal and 203.77bn/- foreign debts.

Backbenchers in the House demanded to know the national debt and what government is doing to settle the debts. The legislators also complained over lack of a fixed assets register in ministries.

In response the minister informed the House that the ministry is proceeding with the registration of all government properties using the assets register. “We have undertaken the exercise in five ministries,” he said.

He said that since the exercise is expensive and sensitive, and government has asked for support from developing partners, and it would be done gradually under supervision of financial consultant.
