The Standard Chartered Bank has plans to set up an
electronic banking unit in Dar es Salaam in a move to expand its operations in
the online segment.
He said the unit would be at the Shamo Complex in the city.
Banks encourage online banking because it is easy and convenient for their
customers to access their account. It also reduces crowds in the banking halls
at their branches.
Moreover, online banking offers a variety of features that
are simpler than visiting the branch and also cost-effective for the banks. Mr
Beda made the revelation when introducing the new head of Consumer Banking
business for Africa, Mr Kariuki Ngari, to journalists in Dar es Salaam over the
weekend.
The Head of Corporate Affairs Juanita Mramba said that in
recognition of the strong performance and growing aspirations of consumer
banking Africa, they had appointed Mr Kariuki to take up the role with effect
from April 1, this year.
Kariuki will lead the Bank’s consumer strategy and its
implementation in Africa, capturing growth opportunities and introducing
innovative strategies to further strengthen the bank’s market position. He is
an accomplished banker with extensive experience.
Until his appointment, he served as the executive director
for consumer banking in East Africa for the Bank.
Addressing reporters, he
said, they intend to bring more Small and Medium Enterprises in the next
quarter and noted that SMEs would come into play in the next couple of years
with regard to benefitting from the gas sub sectors.
