Over 500 companies, institutions and
individuals countrywide have emerged best taxpayers of the year, after
meeting several criteria and will next week be awarded prizes by the
Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA).
TRA Commissioner General, Mr Harry
Kitllya, told a news conference in Dar es Salaam that the "Taxpayer'
Day" scheduled for November 7, will be graced by the Vice-President, Dr
Mohamed Gharib Bilal.
Mr Kitillya said the criteria used to obtain the
best taxpayers as voluntary tax compliance, amount of tax paid and
institutions which helped the TRA in the revenue collection process.
"An award will also be given to a woman leading an institution supporting women in business, a move geared at expanding the tax base," he said.

He
said the TRA has been posting remarkable achievements in revenue
collections and has of late exceeded the targets set. For example,
annual growth of revenue collection in relation to gross domestic
product (gdp) is currently 17 per cent.
Likewise, in 2011/12, the taxman superseded the targets by 4.0 per cent and in the first three months of revenue collection in this fiscal year, TRA has posted outstanding performances of 95 per cent of the targets.

Mr Kitillya said
also that there has been an increase in compliance of the use of
Electronic Fiscal Devices (EFD) that significantly contributed to
increased revenue collections by 25 per cent and 15 per cent for large
and small taxpayers respectively.
Despite the challenges, the TRA has also managed to increase annual revenue collections from 420bn/-in 1996 to about 8.7tri/- in the year 2011/12.
