Dar envisages influx of Indian investors

Tanzania is looking forward to an influx of Indian investors under her incentive-rich Export Processing Zone (EPZ) and Special Economic Zone (SEZ) programmes.

Participation of the Export Processing Zones Authority’s (EPZA) to the just ended 10-day India International Trade Fair (IITF) has wooed Indian investors with keen interest to invest in Tanzania, according to EPZA Director of Development Zawadia Nanyaro.

Ms Nanyaro who participated to the exhibitions said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that at least 10 big Indian investors were expected in the country to put up businesses under EPZ and SEZ programmes.

“We met many (potential Indian) investors who had already done their own searches about investment opportunities in Africa, particularly in Tanzania… our information just helped them to confirm what they had already gathered,” Ms Nanyaro said.

She was confident of receiving many investors from India to invest in textiles, electrical appliances and agroprocessing, among others. “I’m looking forward to receiving many investors from India soon.”

EPZA Planning and Promotion Manager Grace Lemunge explained how difficult it was to manage the EPZA pavilion at the mega multiproduct show due to the high number of visitors who flocked to inquire about Tanzania and available business opportunities.

“It was hectic as we handled a minimum of 200 inquisitive visitors to our pavilion daily… we did our best to meet their expectations,” said Ms Lemunge, citing the Chairman and Managing Director of Sahasra Electronics (Rwanda) PVT Ltd Amrit Manwani, who has promised to visit Dar es Salaam to explore business openings.

“Our expectations are to get many and serious investors from India,” said the manager.

The IITF, the replica of Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, with great assortment of products on display at various national and international pavilions, opened in New Delhi on November 15.

There was a maddening rush at the event last Sunday as over 1,300,000 people were reported to have visited the mega multi-product show.

A sea of people could be seen across pavilions, with little walking space especially in international stalls, cosmetic and pharmaceutical pavilion, theme pavilion, food courts and other stalls. Only three African countries -- Tanzania, South Africa and Ghana participated to the event.
