NMB sponsors Maisha Plus

National Microfinance Bank (NMB) has offered 50m/- sponsorship to Maisha Plus, a reality television show that will this year include Female Food Hero (FFH).

NMB’s Chief executive Officer, Mark Wiessing said on Wednesday that the sponsorship that specifically focuses on the Oxfam run FFH was appropriate for small-scale agriculture investment in the fight against poverty, hunger and joblessness among women.

“Women grow, process, market and prepare much of the household’s food,” Mr Wiessing said. “In many places, women are also the keepers of seeds and protectors of water.”

He said the bank believes in investment in productivity, resilience and sustainability of small-scale food producers particularly women.

This year’s edition of Maisha Plus, apart from housing FFH, will also accommodate youth who will intermingle with food heroes to instill in the young generation an interest to participate in agricultural activities at a tender age.

Oxfam Country Director, Monica Gorman said this year’s FFH in Maisha Plus would bring together producers and consumers to debate on issues around the nature of food system.

“By profiling the individual food producers and modelling the best small scale producer investment needed, we highlight what we mean by food justice,” she said.

Maisha Plus CEO Ali Masoud said the edition will house 15 FFH’s finalists for two weeks and in the last three days 30 youths will join them to get first hand experience on food cultivation.

“What we want is to start planting seeds for the youth to like and love agro-activities, inspiring them to become farmers in the future,” Mr Masoud said.

The winner of this year FFH, according to Mwanahamisi Salim, Oxfam’s Campaign and Advocacy Manager for Economic Justice, will be announced at world food day in October 16.

“The winners will take prizes that enable them to increase productivity,” she said.
