African Barrick picks Tulawaka mine GM

African Barrick Gold (ABG)  has appointed Philbert Rweyemamu (pictured) as General Manager of the Tulawaka Gold Mine.

Mr Rweyemamu, who is one of the most experienced Tanzanian mining executives with  more than 30 years professional mining experience. He will commence duties on  September 3, the statement said.

He previously worked for DeBeers Williamson Mine in various roles, the most senior being Director of Production, a position he held from 2001 to 2003.

He then held the position of Mining Manager Services from 2003 to 2004 at Orapa & Lethakane Mines in Botswana after which he moved to South Africa with DeBeers where he worked as Mining Manager for Oaks Mine in Limpopo.

Mr Rweyemamu was then promoted to the position of Operations Manager for Namaqualand Mines in Kleinzee, South Africa. He left DeBeers and joined ABG's North Mara Mine in 2007 where he worked as Mining Manager.

From 2007 to 2010 he was head of the Artisanal Mining and Small-Scale Mining Project for Barrick in Tanzania before being appointed as Government Relations Manager for ABG, a position he held until March 2012.

Mr Rweyemamu then left ABG to join Shanta Mining Company in Singida Project as General Manager. He holds a Masters of Science degree in Mining Engineering, Geomechanics, from the University of Exeter, Camborne School of Mines in England.

He also holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering from Camborne School of Mines and a Mining Technology Diploma from Hailey School of Mines, Ontario in Canada.
