Muhongo rules out 30% power distribution by 2015

Prof Muhongo
The minister for Energy and Minerals, Prof Sospeter Muhongo, has said that it would be difficult for the state owned power utility, Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) to double its power distribution to reach 30 per cent of users by 2015 due to limited capacity, poor infrastructure and obsolete expertise.

According to him, only 14 per cent of Tanzanians currently are connected to electricity, and that on going projects would link four more per cent of the population to bring the total figure to only 18 per cent.

“Even if we’re to produce 1,000MW today, Tanesco lacks adequate distribution infrastructure.

"Putting up one is very expensive, and it’s already a big burden for customers to off-load the expenses,” he said recently in Dar es Salaam.
