January cattle sales up 13.5% at Pugu auction

Monthly review of cattle sales for January this year at Pugu market shows a drop in prices across all groups compared to December last year, with the exception of the male animals of grade three.

However, the average sales per market day grew by 13.5 per cent last month compared to December. An average of 775 cattle was auctioned daily last month being an increase from the average of 683 cattle the previous month due to an increase in supply.

A report released by the ministry of Industry and Trade shows that mature, male grade two cattle was in January sold at an average price of 615, 000/-, which was a drop a drop of 12.7 per cent from an average price of 705, 000/- of the previous month.

The average price of mature female cattle grade two decreased from 850, 000/- to 795, 000/- last month. A 0.5 per cent drop was recorded in female cattle grade three which was last month sold 561, 000/- from 564, 000/- the previous month.

It was only male cattle grade three whose price last month rose to 610, 000/- from 601, 000/-, a 1.5 per cent rise.

The report shows a mixed trend in goat and sheep prices. However, average sales per market day show a 6.8 per cent drop in goat, being the average of 423 down to 394 goats last month.

Average sale per market day also shows a drop, with average 193 sheep sold December last year compared to average of 135 sheep sold last month, a 30 per cent drop in average sale.

A mature male goat grade two saw a 5.5 per cent price change from81, 500/- to 77, 000/- last month. The price of female goat grade three rose to 57, 500/- from 55, 000/-.

Female goat grade two’s price dropped to 90, 000/- from 93, 000/- December last year, and mature male goat grade three price rose to 65, 500/- from 64, 000/-.

In sheep prices, the male sheep grade three recorded a 7.2 per cent drop in price from 55, 000/- December last year to 51, 000/- last month. Male sheep grade two price dropped to 65, 000/- from 68, 000/-.

The female sheep grade three price rose by 6.6 per cent, from 45,500/- to 48,000/- last month. Female sheep grade two was last month sold 77, 000/- from 75, 000/-.
